Ash Ode
When I saw you ahead I ran two blocks
shouting your name then realizing it wasn’t
you but some alarmed pretender, I went on
running, shouting now into the sky,
continuing your fame and luster. Since I’ve
been incinerated, I’ve oft returned to this thought,
that all things loved are pursued and never caught,
even as you slept beside me you were flying off.
At least what’s never had can’t be lost, the sieve
of self stuck with just some larger chunks, jawbone,
wedding ring, a single repeated dream,
a lullaby in every elegy, descriptions
of the sea written in the desert, your broken
umbrella, me claiming I could fix it.

“In 762, Li Po’s wandering ends south of the Yangtze River, at someone else’s house, when he falls into a river and drowns trying to embrace the moon.”
- from David Hinton’s introduction to his Selected Poems of Li Po (Li Bai)
The Avalanche lose their 6th straight and drop to 14th in the West. Peter Forsberg skated in his first NHL game since April 29th, 2008 - his legs moving a little slowly at first, but his strength along the boards and on the puck was still there, and he set up a few nice opportunities that his teammates failed to capitalize on.
“It felt like it’s the first time I’ve played in about 11 months, so it was pretty hard. I thought we had a couple chances, but overall it was so-so, actually. I could have played better, but hopefully it gets better one game at a time.”
Avalanche Coach Joe Sacco was a little more impressed - “You know what? He actually played better than I expected him to. He was arguably our best player tonight.”
Of course, the Avs have been extraordinarily bad as of late, so perhaps that’s less high praise and more “He’s 37 years old and has had a half-dozen surgeries on his ankles in the last decade, what’s your excuse?” but it bodes well for the continuation of Foppa’s Farewell Tour 2011.
And here’s a picture of a guy from an internet message board explaining that Forsberg’s career point/game average (8th all-time) is inflated due to a decreased quality of competition due to Joe Sakic drawing tougher defensive match-ups during their comparative nominal primes.
