Earth Hour 2010 → boston.com

trick-h:

Some rather nifty pictures (that you can “turn on and off”) taken during Earth Hour.

I’m just not sure why this doesn’t happen nightly. Are we so afraid of the dark? It’s not exactly Gotham in any of these places, not very many of the lights actually get turned out - just the ridiculous floods of day-glo colour that kick at the darkness.

“What twisted people we are. How simple we seem, or at least pretend to be in front of others, and how twisted we are deep down. How paltry we are and how spectacularly we contort ourselves before our own eyes, and the eyes of others…And all for what? To hide what? To make people believe what?” —Roberto Bolaño

Senate "Reform?" → cbc.ca

reallivecaption:

Now, if only there weren’t still 105 of them making $130,400 a year, plus travel expenses, plus living allowances, plus extra salary for any special duties they have, plus full benefits to do pretty much nothing of any real importance. 12 year terms? I mean come on, what does this fix? Nothing. This fixes nothing at all about the Senate, except making it easier for a party to gain majorities in both the House of Commons and the Senate, thus weakening the Senates power of check in Parliament, thus making it even more redundant… What is this? Who thought this was a good idea?..

Oh, right..

Reform is Reform. Or if you’re from the former Canadian Alliance - “Re-foooooorm”

reblogging for that horrible, horrible photo. i think our next PM should be a barn owl.

An interview with the entertaining and enigmatic revolutionary Poet, Roberto Bolano

clicky

MM: Don’t you think that if you have gotten drunk with Isabel Allende and Ángeles Mastretta, their impression of your work would be different?

RB: I don’t think so. Firstly, because those ladies avoid drinking with someone like me. Secondly, because I don’t drink anymore. Thirdly, because not even in my worst drinking rampages I’ve lost the minimum amount of lucidity, a sense of prosody and rhythm, a certain disallowance for theft, mediocrity or silence.
